"Apostles" by Frith Johnson presents a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of duty and the sacrifices we make in the name of responsibility. This striking piece features twelve goats, symbolising the apostles, depicted against a backdrop of vibrant lilies. The choice of goats as a symbol is rooted in Jewish tradition, where Satan is often represented as a goat, representing humanity's sins and darker inclinations. Frith delves into the theme of sacrificing fun for duty, reflecting on how relationships can shift dramatically when faced with difficult choices.

Key Features:

Theme: The artwork addresses the tension between joy and duty, encapsulated in the imagery of goats representing the apostles. It explores the idea that friendships can change rapidly when forced to prioritise responsibility over pleasure, symbolised by the dream of flowers, which often signify joy and love.

Colour Palette: The piece is characterised by a bright colour palette, predominantly featuring acid yellow and white. These colours create a striking visual impact and evoke a sense of vibrancy and energy.

Textures and Patterns: Frith employs a palette knife to create rich textures throughout the piece, while graphite pencil is used to add nonchalant definition and interest, enhancing the overall depth of the artwork.

Composition: The composition focuses solely on the goats' heads, positioned as if they are ‘popping out’ of a field of lilies. This juxtaposition of evil (the goats) and purity (the lilies) creates a powerful contrast that invites viewers to contemplate the duality of human nature.

Techniques: The artist utilises palette knife techniques and layered colours, alongside scored graphite pencil details to enrich the surface and provide a dynamic viewing experience.

Subject Matter: The central subject matter consists of twelve goats set within a lush lily field, each element carefully crafted to convey deeper meanings.

Inspiration: Frith draws inspiration from observing the unfolding of relationships in her life, using this artwork to reflect on the complexities and transformations that occur when choices are made between duty and enjoyment.

Through "Apostles," Frith Johnson challenges viewers to reflect on their own experiences with duty, friendship, and the sacrifices that shape our lives, all while engaging with a visually compelling and symbolically rich composition.
